The Product Discovery Journey

Explore the product discovery journey in this post. Also, see how you can develop the right product with the right customers.

Let’s get started.

Introduction about the Product Discovery Journey

A product discovery journey is an approach to solving a business problem. In which the solution is developed by people who will use it, in contrast to a professional team in an office, whose expertise and experience in the field of the solution may be very limited. The product discovery journey follows some steps which will be discussed below.

The Steps of the Product Discovery Journey

Step 1: Business Idea Generation

The first step of the product discovery journey is to generate business ideas. The business ideas can be generated internally by the product team, or they can be generated externally by the market.

Internal business idea generation can be done by anyone in the company who has an idea for a product or an improvement to an existing product. This includes employees, managers, executives, and even customers. The key to this step is that the person generating the idea must believe that it will be profitable for the company. Also, that it addresses a real problem that exists in the market.

External business idea generation can also come from many different sources, including customers, competitors, industry experts, or even new technology.

The goal of this step is to generate as many ideas as possible. Especially about how to improve the product or create a new one.

Step 2: Idea Validation

The next step is to validate (or invalidate) the business idea. This step also includes all of the different sources of ideas, including internal and external ones.

The idea validation step can be done in any number of ways, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, or user testing. This step is important for validating the idea because it will help determine whether or not there is a real business need for the idea.

Step 3: Product Concept Generation

After the business idea has been validated, the next step is to generate a product concept. This step is where the team can use their expertise and creativity to solve the business problem.

This step is important because it allows the teams to address the problem in a way that will work for the customers and for the company to make money.

Step 4: Concept Validation and Development

After the team has generated a product concept, it is time to validate and refine that concept. This step depends on how much work was put into generating the product concept in step 3, but it should take much less time than generating ideas in step 2.

This step is important because it will show you what is possible and what is not possible with the current technology. Also, this step shows you the potential of the product concept and helps to validate whether or not it will solve the business problem.

Step 5: Design and Development

After the product concept has been validated, it is time to start designing and developing the product. This step can be broken down into many different steps depending on what type of product you are creating, but it is important to remember that at this point, you should not be changing your design or features frequently or you will become inefficient.

Step 6: Product Launch

This step of the product discovery journey includes all of the steps that are needed to launch the product. This step can be very exciting because it includes all of the work that you have done up to this point and will culminate in the launch of a new product!
